See who’s at the door, let people in from your phone, and never hunt for keys again. We install UniFi video doorbells, smart locks, keypads and gate control that work in the same app as your cameras and Wi-Fi.
Access control lets you decide who can get into your home, and when. Instead of keys, doors and gates open with your phone, a PIN code, a card or a fob, and you can see and speak to whoever’s at the door from anywhere.
The Electric Crew is a family-run team of licensed electricians based in Kew. Tom, our director, holds a Victorian Private Security Licence and personally designs every system. We install access control for homes across Melbourne’s inner east and north, as well as rental properties and small businesses.
★★★★★
Tom, Rodney and Joe were great. I set up a UniFi wifi home network, mounted a TV, and made my driveway gate and garage door controllable via my phone. Tom was able to work out what I needed (including hardware requirements), and also made some additional suggestions which I was happy to go with.

Temporary access
Give cleaners, tradespeople or guests their own code for set days and times, then switch it off.
Entry history
See who came and went, and when, with a clip from your door camera for every visit.

Doorbell, Cameras and Door Access in One App
Most homes end up with a patchwork: a battery doorbell with its own app and subscription, a separate lock, and cameras that don’t talk to either.
We build access control on UniFi, the same professional platform we use for security cameras and Wi-Fi. When someone rings the doorbell:
- The doorbell and nearby cameras record the visit
- You get an alert on your phone, wherever you are
- You can speak to the visitor and unlock the door or gate remotely
Everything is wired and recorded on your own system, so there are no batteries to charge and no monthly fees.

Keyless Entry for Airbnb and Rental Properties
Keys are one of the biggest headaches for short-term rentals: late arrivals, lost keys and lockboxes. With a smart access system you can:
- Create a new PIN code for each guest
- Switch access on at check-in and off at checkout
- Let cleaners and maintenance in at set times
- Check your door camera and entry history from anywhere
Guests get simple self check-in, and you spend less time managing the property. See our holiday rental project.
Start simple, add more later
Many clients start with a video doorbell or one smart lock, then add gate control, cameras or more doors over time. Because everything is on the same UniFi platform, each new piece works with what you already have.

Why Professional Installation Matters
Access control relies on reliable power, a solid network and careful setup. When it’s done poorly, doorbells miss visitors, notifications arrive late, locks drop offline and security gaps open up.
- Licensed security installer: in Victoria, installing access control and security systems requires a Private Security Licence. Tom holds licence 922-020-71S.
- Licensed electricians: door strikes, gate motors and doorbells are wired safely and to standard.
- Networking know-how: we make sure your network can handle video and remote access, so everything responds quickly.
- Secure setup: strong passwords, the right user permissions and secure remote access, configured properly from day one.
Recent Access Control Projects

UniFi G6 Pro Entry Video Doorbell
A UniFi G6 Pro Entry intercom set flush into a stone feature wall, so it sits neatly in line with the wall rather than sticking out. Visitors can call the house from the touchscreen, and the homeowners can see and speak to them and open the door from their phones. Residents can also let themselves in with a PIN code or NFC card.

Neat Wired Doorbell Installation
We mounted this UniFi doorbell on the weatherboard beside the entry, with the cabling run neatly inside the wall so no wires are visible. Because it’s wired, it never needs charging and stays connected to the home’s network, so it records every visitor reliably.
Access Control FAQs
What is access control for a home?
It’s a system that controls who can get into your home, and when. Doors, gates and garages open with a phone, PIN code, card or fob instead of a key, and you can grant or remove access at any time.
Do I need a subscription for a UniFi video doorbell?
No. UniFi doorbells record to your own system, so there are no monthly cloud fees. You can still see and speak to visitors from your phone anywhere.
Can I control my driveway gate or garage door from my phone?
Yes, in most cases. We connect existing gate motors and garage doors so they can be opened from your phone, and can add a keypad or intercom at the gate.
What happens if the power or internet goes out?
Your locks can still be opened with a key, PIN or card, depending on the hardware. Local recording keeps working when the internet drops out, and battery backup can be added so the system keeps running during a power cut.
Can access control work with my existing security cameras?
If your cameras are UniFi, everything works together in one app. If you have another brand, Tom can advise whether it’s worth connecting or upgrading. Learn about our camera systems.
Do access control installers need a licence in Victoria?
Yes. Installing security and access control systems in Victoria requires a Private Security Licence from Victoria Police. Tom Kerr, director of The Electric Crew, holds licence 922-020-71S.
