Ceiling Fans, Installed Properly

A good ceiling fan should be almost silent, perfectly still on its mount, and placed where you’ll actually feel it. That comes down to the right fan for the room, a fan-rated fixing into the ceiling structure, and the right controller.

The Electric Crew is a family-run team of licensed electricians based in Kew. We install indoor, outdoor and designer ceiling fans for homes across Melbourne’s inner east and north, from a single bedroom fan to fans throughout a new home.

Where We Install Ceiling Fans

Bedrooms

Quiet DC-motor fans for a cool night’s sleep, with low speeds that are barely audible and a remote by the bed.

Living and open-plan areas

Larger fans sized to the room, so the air moves across the whole space, not just under the fan.

High ceilings and voids

Fans on extension rods for raked ceilings, stair voids and double-height spaces, installed safely at height.

Alfresco and pergolas

Weather-rated outdoor fans for covered decks and outdoor dining. The breeze also helps keep mozzies away.

Replacing old fans

Old, noisy or wobbly fans swapped for quiet modern models, with the mounting and wiring checked to suit the new fan.

New homes and renovations

Fan positions, wiring and switching planned in before the ceilings are finished.

★★★★★

“Tom and his crew were recommended by Richmond Heat and grill to install some fans. Tom was very easy to deal with and Rodney and Joe arrived on time, worked quicly and cleaned up after themselves.
I’d use them again no issues and confidently recommend them non worries.”

Designer and Premium Fans

We install all the major fan brands, including premium designer fans like Big Ass Fans, known for moving a lot of air almost silently. They’re a great choice for large open-plan rooms, high ceilings and architecturally designed homes.

Not sure which fan suits your room? Tom can recommend models that match the size of the space, your ceiling height and the look you’re after. Already bought your fan? We’re happy to install fans you’ve chosen yourself.

Not just for summer

Most modern fans have a reverse (winter) mode. Running the fan slowly in reverse gently pushes the warm air that collects near the ceiling back down into the room, so your heating doesn’t have to work as hard. It’s especially useful in rooms with high ceilings or a fireplace.

Remote and Smart Fan Control

Choose how you want to control your fan: a wall controller, a handheld remote, or an app on your phone. Many modern fans can also be linked into your smart home, so they can run on a schedule, switch off when you leave, or respond to your voice through Apple Home, Google or Alexa. Tom will check which options work with the fan you’ve chosen.

Ceiling Fan FAQs

Do I need an electrician to install a ceiling fan?

Yes. In Victoria, a hardwired ceiling fan must be installed by a licensed electrician. We make sure it’s wired safely and fixed securely, and you’ll receive a certificate of electrical safety for the work.

Can a ceiling fan go where my light is now?

Often, yes. We can usually replace a light fitting with a fan, though the fan needs a proper fan-rated fixing into the ceiling, and sometimes extra wiring for separate fan and light control. Many fans also come with a built-in LED light.

Can you install a fan on a high or raked ceiling?

Yes. We use extension rods for high ceilings and angled mounts for raked ceilings, so the blades sit at the right height to move air. As a guide, blades should be at least 2.1 metres above the floor.

Why is my ceiling fan noisy or wobbly?

It’s usually a loose mounting, unbalanced blades, or an older AC motor. Modern DC-motor fans are much quieter and use less power. We can rebalance an existing fan or replace it with a quieter model.

Can I use a ceiling fan outdoors?

Only if it’s rated for outdoor use. Outdoor fans are built to handle moisture and wind, and need to be installed under a covered area. We’ll help you choose a fan that suits your deck, pergola or alfresco.

Do ceiling fans help in winter?

Yes. Most fans have a reverse mode that gently pushes warm air from the ceiling back down into the room, helping your heating work more efficiently.
