Wired UniFi cameras with clear footage day and night, no subscription fees, and your doorbell, door access and Wi-Fi in the same app. Designed and installed by Tom, a licensed security installer.

Protecting your home starts with a camera system that’s designed properly, installed cleanly and configured correctly. Too many systems fall short on all three: cameras in the wrong places, footage that’s unclear at night, and apps nobody uses.

The Electric Crew is a family-run team of licensed electricians based in Kew. We design and install professional UniFi security camera systems for homes across Melbourne’s inner east and inner north, and for small businesses too. Tom, our director, holds a Victorian Private Security Licence and personally designs every system.

★★★★★

Tom and Rodney are real professionals. We needed to install new outdoor lighting and CCTV cameras, and they did an absolutely fantastic job with putting in over 25 new Hue Outdoor lights and set up a Unifi monitoring system using their new G6 turrets which have worked flawlessly. They were very responsive and we got the job booked in just a few days after my initial inquiry.

UniFi security camera installed on a Melbourne home

One System, One App

We build camera systems on UniFi Protect, a professional-grade platform where your cameras, video doorbell, door access and Wi-Fi all work together and are managed from one app.

That means fewer apps, better reliability, and a system that grows with your home. Start with a few cameras and add a doorbell, access control or whole-home Wi-Fi whenever you’re ready.

Why Budget Camera Installs Let People Down

Many of our camera clients come to us after poor experiences with cheaper installers or off-the-shelf kits. The same problems come up again and again:

  • Cameras in the wrong places, missing the areas that matter
  • Footage that drops out because the Wi-Fi can’t cope
  • Blurry recordings, especially at night
  • Complicated apps that nobody ends up using

We’re often asked to fix or redesign these systems. We’d rather help you get it right the first time.

How much does a home camera system cost?

For most homes, a professionally installed wired camera system costs between $1,500 and $5,000, depending on the size of the property, the number of cameras and how the cabling can be run. A typical home needs 3 to 6 cameras to cover the front entry, driveway, side access and backyard.

Every installation includes camera placement planning, concealed cabling where possible, recording system setup and phone access for live viewing and playback. Tom will give you a clear quote after your free consultation.

Camera Systems for Melbourne Homes

We regularly install camera systems in family homes, period homes and renovations, architect-designed homes, townhouses and multi-storey homes. Most clients want coverage of the front yard and driveway, side access and entry points, and the rear yard and garage, with cameras that don’t detract from the look of the home.

We understand the expectations of higher-end homes, and we install systems that look clean, considered and intentional. We can also advise on camera placement that respects your neighbours’ privacy.

Small business? We also install cameras for offices, retail spaces, health practices, workshops and studios, covering entries and exits, staff-only areas and stock, with remote viewing for owners.

Security Camera Installation FAQs

Do UniFi cameras need a monthly subscription?

No. UniFi Protect records locally on your own system, so there are no ongoing cloud fees. You can still view live footage and playback from your phone anywhere.

What type of security cameras are best for homes?

For most homes, wired IP cameras give the best performance and reliability. Unlike many wireless consumer cameras, they have more stable connections, higher video quality, record continuously without batteries, and are harder to tamper with.

Can security cameras work without Wi-Fi?

Yes. The systems we install use wired Ethernet cabling (Power over Ethernet) to connect cameras directly to the recorder. Wi-Fi is only needed if you want to view your cameras remotely on your phone or tablet.

Where should security cameras go around a house?

The most effective positions cover the front entry, driveway and garage, side paths and the backyard. Covering the approach paths, not just the doors, captures clearer footage of faces and vehicles. We also consider camera height, night lighting, blind spots and tamper protection.

Can my video doorbell and door locks work with the cameras?

Yes. UniFi video doorbells and access control work in the same app as your cameras, so you can see, speak to and let in visitors from anywhere. Learn about access control.

Do security camera installers need a licence in Victoria?

Yes. In Victoria, anyone advising on or installing security cameras must hold a Private Security Licence from Victoria Police. Tom Kerr, director of The Electric Crew, holds licence 922-020-71S.
