The Electric Crew is a family-run team of licensed electricians based in Kew. We supply and install quality LED lighting for homes across Melbourne’s inner east and north, from swapping out a few tired downlights to planning the lighting for a full renovation.
LED Downlights That Look Good
Not all LED downlights are equal. Cheap ones can look cold and harsh, flicker when dimmed or fail after a couple of years. We only install quality fittings that we know perform:
- Warm white light that feels like the old halogens, not a cold office
- Smooth dimming with no flicker or buzzing
- Low-glare designs so you’re not squinting at the ceiling
- Long-lasting fittings backed by a proper warranty
Still have halogen downlights? Replacing them with LEDs uses up to 80% less power per light, runs much cooler, and means you’ll rarely need to change a globe again.

Make Your Lighting Smart
As official Shelly installers, we can make your new or existing lighting smart without changing your switches. A small module hides behind the switch plate, so the switch still works normally, and you also get:
- Control from your phone, at home or away
- Schedules, like lights on at sunset and off at bedtime
- Scenes such as “Movie night” or “Dinner” with one tap
- Voice control through Apple Home, Google or Alexa
- Lights that come on when you arrive home after dark

LED Lighting FAQs
Can you replace halogen downlights with LEDs?
Yes, and it’s one of our most common jobs. We remove the old halogen fittings and transformers and install complete LED downlights. In most homes the new lights fit the existing holes, or we use fittings designed to cover the old cut-outs.
Will LED downlights look cold or harsh?
Not if you choose the right ones. We install warm white LEDs (around 3000K) in living areas, which look very similar to halogens, and can use a slightly cooler light in kitchens and bathrooms where you want it brighter.
Can LED lights be dimmed?
Yes, as long as both the light and the dimmer are compatible. Mismatched dimmers are the main cause of flickering and buzzing, which is why we supply and install them together.
How much power do LED downlights save?
A typical LED downlight uses around 7 to 10 watts, compared with about 50 watts for a halogen, so each light uses up to 80% less power. LEDs also last many years longer and produce far less heat.
Can I make my lights smart without changing the switches?
Yes. As official Shelly installers, we fit a small smart module behind your existing switch, so the switch still works normally and you can also control the lights from your phone, on a schedule or by voice.
Do I need an electrician to install LED strip lights?
Plug-in strip light kits are fine for DIY, but anything hardwired, including the power supply hidden in a cabinet or ceiling, must be installed by a licensed electrician. We’ll also make sure the driver is accessible and properly ventilated so it lasts.
