Why We Recommend Sigenergy

We’ve looked at plenty of EV chargers, and Sigenergy is the one we recommend to clients, and the one we chose for our own home. Here’s why:

  • Charge from your solar. It can use spare solar power to charge your car instead of sending it back to the grid for a small feed-in credit.
  • Protects your switchboard. It watches your home’s total power use and slows charging when the oven, heating and dryer are all on, so nothing trips.
  • Charge when power is cheapest. Schedule charging for off-peak times in the mySigen app.
  • Ready for solar and batteries later. If you add solar or a Sigenergy battery down the track, the charger works with it.

We Charge Our Own Car With One

We have a Sigenergy charger at our own home, so we know how it works day to day, not just how to install it.

No solar? It’s still worth it. Even on grid power alone, a smart charger is much faster than a power point, charges automatically on cheaper off-peak rates, and protects your switchboard. You can lock it from the app, see what each charge costs, and add solar later if you want to.

Actual speeds depend on your car, your home’s power supply and the charger. Most homes in Melbourne have single-phase power. Tom will tell you what your home can support.

EV Charger Installation FAQs

How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?

It depends on the charger, the distance from your switchboard to where you park, and whether your switchboard needs any upgrades. Tom will give you a clear quote after your free consultation, with no surprises.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. Many homes can take a charger as they are, especially with a smart charger like Sigenergy that manages your home’s total load. Older switchboards with ceramic fuses or no room for new circuits may need an upgrade first. We’ll check this during your consultation.

Do I need three-phase power?

No. Most Melbourne homes have single-phase power, and a single-phase charger fills most cars overnight. If you already have three-phase power, a three-phase charger can charge faster, depending on your car.

Will the charger work with my car?

Almost certainly. Electric cars sold in Australia, including Tesla, use the standard Type 2 plug for home charging. Tell us your car model when you get in touch and we’ll confirm.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes. A Sigenergy charger can use spare solar power to charge your car during the day, instead of exporting it to the grid.

Can I charge from a normal power point instead?

You can, but it’s slow, and running a normal power point at full load for many hours isn’t ideal for older wiring. A dedicated charger on its own circuit is faster and safer.
