Built-in electric oven and cooktop in a modern Melbourne kitchen

Oven and Cooktop Installation, Done Right

Ovens and cooktops are some of the most power-hungry appliances in your home. They need the right size circuit, the right cable and the right connection, and many need more than a standard power point.

The Electric Crew is a family-run team of licensed electricians based in Kew. We install and wire ovens, cooktops and rangehoods for homes across Melbourne’s inner east and north, from a straight swap of an old oven to a full kitchen renovation.

What We Install

Induction cooktops

New induction cooktops, including upgrades from gas, with a dedicated circuit sized for the cooktop.

Built-in ovens

Wall ovens, steam ovens and combination ovens, hardwired or plugged in as the manufacturer requires.

Freestanding cookers

Upright ovens with a cooktop on top, wired in and checked for correct clearances.

Rangehoods

Power for rangehoods, including undermount and ceiling-mounted models, coordinated with your cabinetmaker.

Appliance swaps

Old ovens and cooktops replaced, with the existing circuit checked to make sure it suits the new appliance.

Outdoor kitchens

Power for outdoor cooktops, barbecues, pizza ovens and fridges in alfresco areas.

Switching From Gas to Induction

Induction cooktops are fast, precise, easy to clean and much safer around kids, which is why so many Melbourne homes are making the switch. But an induction cooktop needs a lot more power than a gas cooktop, so the upgrade is about more than the appliance itself.

  • A dedicated circuit from the switchboard, sized for your cooktop
  • A switchboard check to make sure there’s space and capacity, and an upgrade if needed
  • Working with your plumber or gasfitter, who disconnects and caps the old gas supply

Tom will check all of this before you buy, so there are no surprises on installation day.

What Affects the Cost?

Every kitchen is different, so we quote each job individually. The main things that affect the price are:

  • A straight swap or a new installation: replacing an oven on an existing, suitable circuit is quicker than running a new one
  • Induction upgrades: a new dedicated circuit is usually needed, and sometimes a switchboard upgrade
  • Distance from the switchboard: longer cable runs, or difficult access under floors or through ceilings, take more time
  • Number of appliances: it’s more efficient to install an oven, cooktop and rangehood in one visit

Your first consultation is free, and you’ll get a clear quote before any work starts.

Renovating, or fitting out a commercial kitchen?

We work alongside builders, plumbers and cabinetmakers to plan the power for new kitchens, including circuits for the oven, cooktop, rangehood, dishwasher and fridge, bench power points and lighting. We also wire commercial ovens and cooktops for cafes and small businesses.

Oven & Cooktop FAQs

Do I need an electrician to install an oven or cooktop?

For any hardwired oven or cooktop, yes. In Victoria, fixed electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. Some smaller ovens come with a plug, but they still need a suitably rated power point on the right circuit.

Does an induction cooktop need its own circuit?

Usually, yes. Most induction cooktops draw much more power than a standard power point can supply, so they need a dedicated circuit from the switchboard. Check the cooktop’s spec sheet, or send it to us and we’ll tell you exactly what’s needed.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade for induction?

Not always. It depends on how much space and capacity your switchboard has, and what else you’re running. We check this before you buy, so you know upfront.

Can you disconnect my gas cooktop?

The gas supply must be disconnected and capped by a licensed gasfitter or plumber. We regularly work alongside them on gas-to-induction upgrades, and can coordinate the job so it all happens smoothly.

Can you install an oven I’ve bought myself?

Yes. Most of our oven and cooktop jobs are for appliances our clients have chosen. Just send us the model so we can check the power requirements before installation day.
