Lighting With as Much Personality as the House
This fabulous Thornbury home is full of colour, from the harlequin-painted stair wall to the bold wallpapers, and it’s built around the casual but vibrant lifestyle of a young family.
We listened closely to the owners and helped them choose and install lights that are as stylish as they are practical, so every space is well lit and looks the part.
Designer Pendants in Every Room
Over the kitchen bench, a row of exposed bulb pendants on coloured cords adds a playful touch. In the hallway and dining room, wire cage pendants throw soft patterns on the walls, and in the bedrooms, bright yellow cord pendants hang in loose loops.
Even the bathrooms have feature pendants, and a wall lamp lights the stairs. Each fitting was positioned and hung to suit the room, so it works as a feature and as good, useful light.
A Ceiling Fan and LED Outdoor Lighting
We also installed a Big Ass Fans ceiling fan to keep the family cool in summer, and upgraded the outdoor lighting to efficient LEDs.
Later: Turning It Into a Smart Home
The family asked us back later to turn the house into a smart home. We retrofitted wireless automation modules behind the existing switches and power points, with no new wiring through the walls, and programmed them so everything can be controlled at the switch or from a phone.
Now the family can:
- Turn lights, appliances and heating and cooling on and off from their phone
- Set schedules so lights and appliances switch on and off at set times
- See how much power individual rooms, lights and appliances, such as the washing machine, are using
Today we’d do this with Shelly smart controls, which fit behind your existing switches in exactly the same way.
